Until 1976 Exmouth trains started at Exeter Central, formerly called Exeter Queen Street.
A number of stations have opened (and some closed) over the years in the Exeter suburbs, including the new station at Digby & Sowton, funded by Tesco and Devon CC, opened in 1975. The large US Navy yard at Newcourt has now being built on and plans are well in hand for a new station.
Here is a selection of pictures taken by David Tozer in and around January 1988 at Exmouth Junction. At that time the Exmouth Branch had a small passing loop between Exmouth Junction to just short of Polsloe Bridge. British Rail, as part of the Exeter Re-signalling scheme, relaid the points and took out the loop. In addition all semphore signalling was replaced with colour lights. At the same time Topsham Signal Box closed.
It would now be good to see work start to restore the double junction and double track on the branch!
